Chapter 5

The rooster crowed when the dawn came, but neither of them moved. They were still tangled up in each other, limbs and sheets twisted like some of the branches of the tree they were propagating. They had spent the night experimenting, shyly at first, but more demanding as they became comfortable with each other’s bodies. Both were equally sated and completely boneless. Athena couldn’t help but add things to her mental list of experiences she wanted to share with Reese when they were both a little more mobile.

His playful whisper tickled the top of her head. "I should like to experience last night all over again but in a woman's body. From a female’s perspective."

She raised her head and looked into his clear but slightly worried expression. Her smile removed the doubt from his expression. "I would rather enjoy that. But I will have you know it's the person inside I'm making love to. That is where I find your beauty." Athena lowered her head and snuggled closer, the scent of apricot surrounding her from his warm skin. “I will also have you know experiencing last night from a female’s perspective was completely satisfying for both my body and soul.”

He tightened his embrace around her shoulders and sighed. His body was firm, as if carved from marble, yet soft and yielding in all the right places. She was comfortable, head pillowed on his chest, in a way she had never wanted before. She had always been one to avoid the awkward morning after routines, especially if she had an early morning session planned with her worshippers. She often left before her chosen partner ever opened their eyes. That she wanted to stay in the circle of Reese’s arms was surprising and somewhat frightening to her. Especially since many of the things they experienced the night before had been a first for them both.

He was a generous and playful lover, willing to try anything Athena suggested, which suited her demanding nature. Reese’s inexperience would work in her favor, for now, but she knew the time would come when she would want to share that final piece of herself. Reese was everything she could ask for in a partner, soft where she was hard, soothing where she was harsh, and his brilliant mind worked out solutions from all angles, which she appreciated as a leader. She was ready to consider the possibilities but not until things were settled with Poseidon. Losing the city to him would be devastating, so she refused to take any chances with her people.

Reese’s stomach growled. He kissed the top of her head and drew her closer. “I could lay here all day, but I should look into finding us some breakfast.”

“I don’t need much. I often eat on the run.”

“Toasted bread and jam it is.” He started to move, and she slipped her head from the comfort he provided. She already missed the warmth on her cheek. “Don’t move a muscle, I’ll be right back.”

He glanced back over his shoulder as he left the room and smiled.
